H.Om.E Project: An intercultural dialog between Computers and traditions around the concepts of Home

Abstract. New computational technologies for creation and production offer interesting aesthetic and creative possibilities to be explored, particularly in its respectful dialogue with traditional crafts (textiles, crafts). For this project, the concept of “home” or “genealogy” is taken as a common ground, for free creative interpretation and exploration, from on its different meanings: as a place where we live (house), as a text for social interactions (constitutions), as the sky over us (astronomical data), among others. H.Om.E project aims to create bridges between cultures from South America and Asia, exploring the potential of the encounter between technologies and traditions, methodologies, and scales: from local traditions to global digital culture; from handcraft to computer-generated artwork; among others. Artists from Chile, Taiwan, and Japan will develop different kinds of pieces; data physicalization in textiles; data for parametric and generative design; and visual pattern creation based on legal texts; among other explorations. This paper seeks to briefly describe the H.Om.E Project, the main concepts used, its methods, complexities, and troubles of the process, with attention to the free exploration of the possibilities of computational and technologically mediated tools in its encounter with traditions and crafts. Also, some description of the current stage, next steps, and possible outcomes of the project are commented on.

Generative Systems and Extended Mind as Transformation Similarity Models Connecting Two Cultures

Abstract: The H.Om.E project aims to build cross-cultural bridges between new computational technologies and traditional cultures. To create meaningful connections between the two cultures, this paper collects cognitive science theoretical models that explain generative AI and perception based on the similarity analogy, and  applies these models to cultural heritage and new computational technologies to speculate on a larger and more complex perception system, even though this may be a poetic act of panpsychism. This paper innovatively regards both human and non-human residents as networks generated by flowing lines and views cultural heritage as thinking agents within the framework of Extended Mind Theory (EMT). It proposes using generative AI tools (such as Variational Autoencoders, VAEs) to extract compressed representations from cultural heritage and nature, comparing this process to how cognitive science analogizes generative AI to perception. The discussion includes the possibility of using these compressed representations to support this network of thinking objects. Additionally, on the interdisciplinary philosophical level, the paper discusses the possibility of using generative tools to obtain abstract representations that become higher-level abstract concepts to encompass the lower-level technical terms of experts from various fields within the research team. This approach may alleviate the two-culture problem between the sciences and the humanities.

The Iterations of Designing Artifacts Using Abstract Transformation Models in H.Om.E Project

Abstract: This document records the manufacturing processes and strategies for artworks in the H.Om.E Project, based on dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) technology. Dye-sensitized solar cells are a relatively low-cost and easy-to-produce third-generation solar technology. They are glass-based and semi-transparent, capable of being naturally or chemically dyed, and can be customized with patterns through screen printing techniques. This paper proposes using DSSC as a carrier for the concept of generative memory and explores the idea of utilizing its photoelectric properties and variational auto-encoder (VAE) for sound art installations. Finally, it discusses the potential of integrating these cells into textiles and introduces the material and conceptual connections between dye-sensitized solar textiles and memristor matrices.

Pursuit of Emergence of Cultural Qualities from Algorithms

Abstract: When we try to have a systematic way to think about designs, there are two major ways to take. One is to collect many existing designs, analyze them and categorize them into categories. Another is to start with an idea about a mechanism or a rule to generate design, expand it into more developed rules, and think about variations which can be generated with the rules. The first one then can build a design system through choices of categories and combinations of them. The first approach is inductive and the second is deductive. Generated results of the first system tend to be figurative and results of the second tend to be abstract.  The first approach can be seen as humanistic and the second scientific. The first approach can deal with semantic issues and the second tends to deal with syntactic issues. Variations of results of the first tend to be discrete because they are generated through combinations of discrete choices. Variation of results of the second tend to be continuous because they are generated by applying the set of rules with continuous variations of parameters.
