Concept

Part of the idea in this team was to continue Ricardo’s old piece “Pinyin”, a performative and interactive garment he made it years ago in Taiwan. This time he wanted to make a garment base on the traditional Atayal cape with capacitive sensing. We have interviewed few villagers about their feedback for this workshop and has put their voice samples into a Bare conductive board, the samples can be later replayed by the touch to the conductive stainless threads embedded on the cape. There are 8 to 10 threads and each of it can trigger one clip of the samples.

The other work we have done together with the Atayal weavers is a special bow loom. Bow loom is a type of loom only be used by the male in the tribe, usually hunters. One part of this loom is a piece of bended bamboo hold by a stainless thread, this stainless thread is connected to a EMF module, in order to catch the EMF and convert it to sound. The other part of the loom is a finished woven strip with several asymmetric woven totems which is used for an AR recognition mobile app program. The respondent’s face were pre-3D scanned and were paired with those asymmetric pattern and can be reviewed in the mobile monitor. The reason why the pattern was made in asymmetric is to improve the accuracy of mobile scanning.

Project created by Jimi Mased, by the mean to embed digital information to the traditional textile format, Jimi Mased exploits the woven patterns on the EMF bow loom created by the Ping Hui Chen. Each woven pattern was attached with the 3D model of the respondent and can be reviewed by a mobile app AR scanner.
