In this group, we dealt with two topics: Pattern of textiles, and Fictional future. We were fascinated with the Atayal traditional weaving patterns and the pattern textile samples that gets inherited from mother to her daughters. We thought of creating a version of future textile samples of Atayal, that incorporates eTextiles.

Atayal EMF circuit embroidery

A fractal antenna embroidery is producing by a Tajima embroidery machine at Lihan Workshop

Combining the machine embroidery and conductive threads, as well as the Atayal diamond pattern, a prototype of a flexible antenna with both Atayal ornamentation and functional EMF antenna with square coil shape was made. The diamond pattern refers eyes in Atayal culture, and the eyes represent the soul of a person, as well as the meaning of ancestors. The EMF collected by this “antenna” are then output as audio waves by an amplifier circuit chip installed on the cotton fabric. This piece symbolizing how two communities intemperate the same concept “the invisible force”. This work was done by Xiangxiang from Lihan Workshop and Martin De Bie.

Mika Satomi spent most of her focus on learning how to operate the traditional Atayal ground loom and has also tried some ideas to merge LED circuit with it by implementing conductive threads to the circular woven fabric structure during the weaving process. After the event, Mika Satomi even expanded her staying in the Linhan Wrokshop for few more days in order to increase her skill of operating this traditional Atayal ground loom.

Glitch Embroidery

By destroying part of the embroidery file for the Tajima machine digitally, the broken file lead this glitch result in physical embroidered pattern on fabric. Glitch is one of the major exploring in Nukeme’s work. In the workshop he tried to break a Tajima file with Atyal diamon pattern and have the unexpected glitched physical result.
